In Oil&Gas Industry, SAPHIRA™ process can be integrated in treatment train for the treatment of produced water in oil & gas upstream or on ZLD (Zero Liquid Discharge) treatment train in oil and gas downstream. SAPHIRA™ is an innovative compact process for industrial waters treatment with multi applications. This technology has been developed by Veolia Research & Innovation for Veolia Water Technology. This is a High Dense Solid Chemical reactor/contactor including reactive zone and suspended solid separation in one single unit which allows a very compact process. This technology can be used for Salt crystallization/precipitation as softening or scaling compounds removal and for operation requiring high dense solid concentration as adsorption.

This innovation encompasses several areas of expertise of R&I, such as optimization and modeling of soil and the environment, agronomy and the development of a web-based application.
Developed jointly by the R&I of Veolia and SEDE, a Veolia subsidiary, it is based on the knowledge and modeling of the carbon dynamics in the soil and the dynamics of N-P-K nutrients as a result of repeated soil amendments. It makes it possible to determine the added value of composts according to their specific characteristics.

Veolia wishes to offer packages to brewers, including alternative solutions for the treatment and recovery of their spent grains (the main by-product of the beer manufacturing process). To contribute to this offering, the R&I teams have studying and comparing different energy recovery technologies for these high-energy residues, based on combustion, anaerobic digestion or percolation. A decision support tool to compare these new valorization paths with the conventional ones is being finalized.

Developed by the R&I in association with TRIADE Électronique, a subsidiary of Veolia Recycling & Waste recovery, this process aims to dismantle LCD (liquid crystal display) flat screens and to remove the mercury lamps in less than 1 minute per screen. This innovative process, which meets recovery needs for which there was no solution until now, provides a semi-automated and differentiating industrial solution.

SAPHIRA™ is compact physical-chemical reactor for the treatment of industrial wastewater with a high solid density. This technology is integrated into several treatment processes. It is found mainly in the STRUVIA process, for the recovery, the valorization and the reuse of phosphates and nitrates from wastewater in the form of struvite crystals. Thanks to this process, industrial and municipal clients can transform a source of cost (purchase of metal salts, sludge disposal costs) into a source of profit (sale of struvite as a fertilizer).

Developed under a partnership with Endetec and its subsidiary Neroxis, the two KAPTA probes are connected to an expert data processing system that detects changes in water quality in real time, identifies contaminants and effectively monitors drinking water distribution. They are currently deployed on distribution networks in Tidworth (GB), Nice (FR) and the Vendée region (FR). The Group's objective is its widespread use in monitoring all distribution networks, by deploying some 1,000 probes over five years.

Decision support tool, this software transforms the substation into the main entity for establishing diagnostics and optimizing the heating network. This innovation monitors the performance of substations thanks to algorithms and methodologies developed specifically for heat networks. A prototype was tested under real-life conditions with the operations teams of the Poznan (Poland) network.

The "Quantitative management of water resources" research project aims to develop tools to manage the quantity of water available in - both surface and underground resources.
Within this framework, Research & Innovation has developed two tools:
- The Hydrological Situation Report, in order to detect any critical situation on the water resource and to anticipate water deficits,
- The multi-resources quantitative management software for the management of water production systems, with several interconnected plants and resources.

With more than 80% of ammonia removed, this process offers an efficient and environmentally friendly solution, in particular for the treatment of advanced sludge effluents, the treatment of nitrogen upstream of anaerobic treatment systems, and the treatment of leachate.

New process, coupling air flotation and granular filtration in the same structure, offering a reliable seawater pre-treatment solution for difficult water (with the risk of algal blooms) and providing the necessary protection for reverse osmosis desalination plants. Compared to existing ones, this new technological solution reduces the size of pre-treatment plants by more than 50%, as well as a significantly reducing their cost.

This process, developed by the Veolia R&I, transfers the sorting to the touchscreen. I-SORT3R™ improves the working conditions of operators by avoiding all contact with waste. An industrial prototype has been in use in a sorting center in Amiens (FR) since September 2013. This innovation opens the way for a new generation of sorting centers that combine technological innovation and human expertise.

The term "Managed Aquifer Recharge" describes the intentional recharge and storage of water into an aquifer for subsequent recovery or for environmental benefits. Managed Aquifer Recharge is one of the solutions that can be investigated to reduce the water scarcity. Veolia R&I has developed recommendations for design of Aquifer Recharge - by injection wells and infiltration basins - from the phase of preliminary study to the design and maintenance of those systems.

This innovation helps district heating network operators to define their maintenance plans and the renewal of network infrastructures. The prototype demonstration phase went off without a hitch on 800 km of network in collaboration with teams from the Lodz (Poland) network.
